Reviews: install vs theme code vs metafields.

Judge.me, Stamped, Yotpo, Okendo, or just metafields and theme code. When to install, when to skip, and when to replace the app.

Reviews stack at $50K/year

Install: Judge.me (free plan) or Loox's free Beginner tier. Judge.me's free plan already covers automated email review requests, star ratings, and photo/video reviews. The $15/month Awesome plan is for review-request customization and activating the Google Shopping ratings feed, not for unlocking photos. Loox also has a free tier (up to 500 cumulative orders) if you'd rather start there. If you're getting 10+ orders/week (500+/year), the automation pays for itself vs manual outreach.

Skip: Yotpo, Okendo, Stamped. Yotpo has a free plan under 50 orders/month, but once you're past that its reviews-only tier starts at $79/month. Okendo's entry tier is $19/month, cheap on paper, but its useful integrations (Klaviyo sync included) sit behind the $299/month Power plan. Stamped no longer has a free plan, starting around $23/month. At $50K/year revenue, none of this beats free for star ratings and email requests.

Or skip entirely: No app if volume is tiny. If you're getting 1–2 orders/week (under 100/year), collect reviews via a Typeform or Google Form. Paste them into product descriptions or metafields. No app needed. Manual works when volume is this low.

Watch for: bundle apps like Vitals or Fera. These package reviews with 40+ other conversion tools for one flat fee (around $30/month). Only worth it if you'd actually install 4-5 of the bundled tools anyway, otherwise it's an expensive reviews app wearing a bundle discount.

Kill signal: You're paying $15/month and have 8 total reviews. If you installed Judge.me a year ago and collected 8 reviews, downgrade to the free plan or cancel it. You're paying for automation you don't need.

Reviews stack at $250K/year

Install: Judge.me Awesome ($15/month), Stamped (roughly $23–$100/month by order volume), or Loox (free up to 500 orders, then $49.99/month Convert). You're doing 50–100 orders/week. Photo reviews, incentivized reviews (discount for submitting), and automated follow-up sequences matter now. Judge.me is still the best value. Loox is photo-focused (good for apparel, home goods) and its free tier stretches further than you'd expect. Stamped adds Q&A and Google Shopping integration but no longer has a free plan, so it's the priciest entry point of the three.

Skip: Yotpo unless you're buying the full suite. Yotpo's reviews-only plan runs $79–$169/month at this volume, loyalty is a separate charge on top ($199+/month). If you only need reviews, Judge.me or Stamped is cheaper. If you need reviews + loyalty + referrals + SMS in one platform, Yotpo's bundled cost lands closer to $370–$600/month.

Replace with theme code: The display widget only. If Judge.me's widget loads 400–600ms of JavaScript on the product page, keep Judge.me for collection (email requests, moderation, photo storage) but fetch and display reviews in Liquid. Use Judge.me's API or metafields. The page loads faster. You still pay $15/month but the PDP is 300–500ms faster.

Kill signal: Product page JavaScript cost over 500ms. Run Lighthouse on the product page. If a reviews app is adding 500ms+ of JavaScript execution time, it's costing conversions. Either replace the display widget with Liquid or switch apps. Speed cost beats $15/month savings.

Reviews stack at $1M/year

Install: Okendo ($119–$499/month), Yotpo ($169–$799+/month), or custom. You're doing 200+ orders/week. You need photo/video reviews, customer Q&A, Google Shopping/Meta catalog integration, and on-site review displays across collection pages and search. Okendo is strong at this band, but confirm you're on its $299/month Power plan or higher if you need the Klaviyo sync. Yotpo works if you're also buying loyalty/SMS. Or build custom. Both bill partly on order volume, so a strong sales month can bump the bill.

Replace with theme code: Display layer entirely. Keep the app for collection (automated emails, moderation dashboard, photo storage, Google Shopping feed) but render reviews in the theme. Fetch reviews from the app's API or sync to product metafields (via Flow or scheduled script). Display in Liquid, server-side. Product page JavaScript drops 500–800ms. You still pay for the app's collection and moderation tools, but the page is fast.

Replace entirely: Custom reviews system (metafields + Flow + theme). If the app is costing $500+/month and you're technical, build custom: send review requests via Shopify Flow or email app, collect responses via Typeform or custom form, store reviews as product metafields (JSON), moderate in Shopify admin, display in theme Liquid. Google Shopping feed via metafield export. This is 2–4 weeks of dev work. Only worth it if app cost is high and you have dev resources.

Kill signal: "Verified Buyer" badge on a fake review. If you see fake reviews slip through, the app's verification isn't working (or you imported reviews from another platform without flagging them). Either tighten moderation settings or switch to a system where you control verification. Fake reviews lose trust fast.

Widget vs collection

Install: Judge.me free (photo reviews included; paid is for request customization and the Google Shopping feed). Skip Yotpo-class spend under ~$250K unless reviews are the brand.

Kill signal: Review app JavaScript adds 400–800ms+ to the PDP and uninstall left Liquid/snippets in the theme. Keep the reviews data; replace the display with theme + metafields if the widget is the slow part.

Replace with theme: Star rating + a few featured quotes in the theme; full gallery only if it earns its weight.

When to call us

We audit the stack, replace slow widgets with theme code, or build custom reviews systems that store data as metafields and display natively. Storefront, business automations, and email. A project or a retainer. Speed covers the broader problem.

Straight answers.

Not always. If you're collecting reviews via email requests and pasting them manually, an app saves time. If you're getting 5 reviews a year, skip the app.
