The problems
A messy theme is usually how you got here. It's not a different business.
Speed and a messy theme show up too. They’re usually how you got here. They’re not a different business.
The theme is in the way
You run the brand. An uninstalled app still on the product page is one leak on the storefront. If that’s the one costing money, we start here.
You want a cart drawer, quick add, swatches that don’t reload the page. The theme can’t take it. Not because Shopify can’t. Because the theme is three years of leftover apps and a customization in a file nobody should have copied.
The next idea starts at zero. A developer quotes a rebuild. An app promises the feature. The app leaves code behind when you uninstall it. The page gets slower. The next idea starts at less than zero.
I uninstalled the app. The page is still slow.
I uninstalled the app. The page is still slow. Uninstalling does not uninstall the Liquid. Leftover ghost code in the theme still ships: the script, the section, the injected setting. That’s the leftover script, not a slogan.
What this actually is
Theme debt is not “it looks old.” It’s code that fights the next change. Leftover app sections. Duplicate scripts. A snippet that was the Klaviyo pixel in 2022 and is now a second listener. Settings that only exist because an app injected them.
Too many apps is the usual cause. Each one was a reasonable yes. Together they own the product page. Uninstalling does not uninstall the Liquid. A theme update wipes customizations because they lived in files Shopify overwrites.
That’s also how you get two cart emails and a store Klaviyo can’t see. Same files. Same retainer. Leftover code is how you got here. The next leak might be search, flows, or a job in the business.
Why the usual vendor misses it
Freelancers add the feature you asked for. They don’t retire the last three features’ leftovers. A big shop proposes a new theme as a project. You get a new mess. A speed app defers scripts and leaves the Liquid.
The missed work is what stays, what dies, and what belongs in the theme so you stop buying it as an app.
What we do on the store
We look at the theme and the apps like a codebase, not a mood board. What ships on the product page. What injects JavaScript. What would break on the next publish.
- Remove leftover app code, not just the app listing.
- Put one-off hacks into theme features you can keep: quick add, cart drawer, swatches.
- Hold speed in the same pass. Debt and a slow product page are the same files. See storefront speed.
Why the Theme Store work matters here
At Troop Themes, Jarid spent 8 years shipping Blockshop, Maker, Beyond, and Emerge through Shopify’s review. Features like quick add, the cart drawer, and swatches shipped once and landed on all of them. That’s the opposite of a merchant theme that can’t take a cart drawer without a unique snowflake.
What we own is the offer. The scan is the start. Public HTML will show some of the sprawl. The rest needs the theme. Then we stay.
Straight answers.
Leftover app code, unpublished junk that still ships, customizations a theme update wipes. Every launch starts by undoing last quarter. Speed and a messy theme are usually the same files.
