Custom Shopify theme vs premium theme.
We built premium themes for the Shopify Theme Store for eight years. For most new stores, a premium theme is the right buy. A custom theme starts paying when the store has outgrown its theme’s settings, or looks like every other store in its niche.
Is it worth paying for a Shopify theme?
Over a free theme, only for what it adds that you’ll use: four of the premium brands below run Dawn, Shopify’s free theme. Of the 1,349 themes in the Theme Store in October 2026, 24 were free and the rest cost $100 to $500, paid once (Shopify Theme Store). A paid theme buys more sections and settings, support from the team that made it, and free updates while it’s installed from the Theme Store (Shopify).
A premium theme is the right buy when:
- The store is new. Money goes further on products, photography and ads, and you learn what the store needs before paying for it.
- One of its demos is close to the store you want. Its settings and your photography do the rest.
- You’ll stay inside its settings. They carry over to every update; code edits can stop one carrying over cleanly.
A custom theme starts paying when:
- The store has outgrown its theme. Each thing the theme can’t do becomes an app or a code edit, and each one adds weight and makes the next update harder.
- It looks like every other store in its niche. A Theme Store theme is shared with thousands of stores, and its settings only go so far.
- Speed on phones is holding sales back. A theme built for every store ships every feature to yours (Shopify speed optimization).
Built from scratch, a custom theme takes months and about $3,000 to $25,000 (what a Shopify website costs). Ours starts from the core those eight years left us, and is live in three weeks: custom Shopify theme development.
What is the highest converting Shopify theme?
No independent study names one. The lists that rank themes by conversion come from theme sellers, app makers and affiliates, and none we read shows its data. Shopify doesn’t publish conversion by theme.
A theme moves conversion through what it does on your pages: how fast the product page loads on a phone, whether shipping and returns show beside the button, how quickly a shopper reaches checkout. Those you can measure on your own store, before and after a change: Shopify conversion rate optimization.
What Shopify theme do luxury brands use?
Mostly their own. Of 34 premium brands on Shopify, 21 run a custom theme:
| Theme | Brands |
|---|---|
| Custom (21) | Kylie Cosmetics, Allbirds, Rothy’s, Glossier, Rhode, Summer Fridays, Monos, Away, Kith, Alo Yoga, Pangaia, Missoma, Gorjana, Fenty Beauty, Victoria Beckham Beauty, Diptyque, Our Place, Merit, Kosas, ILIA, OUAI |
| Dawn, Shopify’s free theme (4) | Brooklinen, SKIMS, Parachute, Steve Madden |
| Prestige (1) | Cuyana |
| Release (1) | Staud |
| Stretch (1) | Tatcha |
| Not reported (6) | Ruggable, Tecovas, Vuori, Bombas; Gymshark and Fashion Nova run their own front end on Shopify |
Of the seven on a Theme Store theme, only Staud’s was installed from the Theme Store. The other six report no Theme Store ID, so most likely run a copy uploaded to the store and edited, which Shopify doesn’t update.
How we read it: a Shopify storefront names its theme in the page’s source, and a theme installed from the Theme Store carries its Theme Store ID. A name that isn’t a Theme Store theme counts as custom. Of the 48 premium and luxury brands we looked at, 34 were on Shopify, 11 weren’t and 3 couldn’t be read. Read on November 3, 2026; any store can change its theme.
How to make your Shopify store look premium
Four of the brands above do it on a free theme, so it isn’t the theme. It’s what goes on it:
- Photography shot for the store. The same light, crop and background on every product, so a collection reads as one set.
- One or two typefaces, used the same way on every page.
- Less on the page. Few badges, pop-ups and app widgets, and room around the products.
- Its own words. Product copy in the brand’s voice, not the supplier’s.
- Speed. A store that stalls on a phone doesn’t feel premium, whatever it looks like.
All of it works on a premium theme. A custom one adds what its settings can’t: a layout, a section or a detail that’s yours alone.
FAQ. Straight answers.
Do premium Shopify themes get updates?
Free, while the theme is installed from the Theme Store. Its settings and section content carry over to each new version, and so do code edits unless the update changes the same code, when they’re copied across by hand. A copy uploaded to the store gets no updates.
How far can I customize a premium Shopify theme?
As far as its settings go, without code: type, colors, sections and their order. Past them it takes code, and every edit is one more thing to carry into the next update.
Is Dawn good enough for a premium brand?
SKIMS, Brooklinen, Parachute and Steve Madden run on Dawn, Shopify’s free theme, each likely edited for the brand. A premium look comes from what goes on a theme more than from the theme.
