Shopify’s variant limit: 2,048 variants and three options.
Shopify allows 2,048 variants and three options per product. Here’s what that means for your theme and apps, how to count your variants, and what to do with a WooCommerce product that doesn’t fit.
The limits
| Limit | Today | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Variants per product | 2,048, on every plan | Shopify |
| Options per product | 3 | Shopify |
| Variants a theme gets from Liquid | 250; the theme loads the rest as the shopper picks | Shopify |
| Some apps, themes and channels | May handle only 100 | Shopify |
| Combined listings (Plus) | Up to 2,000 variants across up to 60 products | Shopify |
What changed, and why many guides still say 100
Until October 2025, a product could have 100 variants. On 15 October 2025 Shopify raised it to 2,048 for every store (Shopify), after moving its product API to GraphQL so apps could handle the larger products (Shopify). Many of the guides that rank for this still give the old number. The three-option limit didn’t move, and Shopify’s staff have said it will stay “for the foreseeable future” (Shopify).
Where 2,048 isn’t really 2,048
- Your theme. Liquid hands a theme at most 250 of a product’s variants. Above that, the theme has to fetch variants as the shopper picks options, the way Shopify’s guide for large products describes (Shopify). An older theme can show a size as sold out that isn’t.
- Your apps. Shopify warns that some apps, theme app extensions and sales channels might not support more than 100 variants; its own Stocky and the legacy Order Printer don’t (Shopify). Apps still on Shopify’s older REST API are the usual suspects.
- Search results and feeds. Whatever reads your product from the theme (its structured data, some feed apps) sees the same first 250.
How to count your variants
A product’s variants are every combination of its options’ values, multiplied:
- 4 sizes × 8 colors = 32 variants.
- 6 sizes × 12 colors × 3 materials = 216 variants, within the limit, but close to a theme’s 250.
- 10 widths × 10 drops × 6 fabrics × 4 linings is four options, which Shopify can’t take as variants at any count.
Moving from WooCommerce
WooCommerce has no documented limit on variations. A variable product can carry as many attributes as you like, and its admin pages them past 15 variations. On the shop page, a product with more than 30 variations stops updating its dropdowns as the shopper picks, for speed (WooCommerce). So a WooCommerce store can have products Shopify can’t take as they are: four or more attributes, or more than 2,048 combinations.
Count them before the move, not during it. When we move a store, the preview before the call shows your products and variants counted, with any product over three options or 2,048 variants listed and what we’d do with it.
When a product doesn’t fit
- Split it. One product per material or collection, each with its own sizes and colors. On Plus, combined listings show them as one product page.
- Take the choice that isn’t stock as a line item property. Engraving text, a monogram or a gift note doesn’t need to be a variant: the product form asks for it and the order carries it (Shopify).
- Use an options app, for choices that change the price but aren’t tracked as stock. It’s one more app on the page, so it comes last.
Check your theme before you add a large product
Add a test product with more than 250 variants, unpublished, and preview it: pick every option, and check that a variant past the 250th shows its price, its image and its stock. A theme that can’t needs updating before the product goes live. Ours builds its option picker from Shopify’s option values and fetches the variant a shopper picks, the way Shopify’s guide describes; the technical spec covers what else it does.
FAQ. Straight answers.
What is Shopify’s variant limit?
2,048 variants per product, on every plan, since October 2025. The limit of three options per product hasn’t changed.
Why do some guides still say 100?
100 was the limit until October 2025, and many guides haven’t been updated. Some apps and channels are still limited to 100, so check yours.
Can I have more than three options?
Not as variants. Split the product, take the extra choice as a line item property (for engraving text, say), or use an options app.
Will my theme show all 2,048 variants?
Not by default. Liquid returns at most 250 of a product’s variants, so a theme has to load the rest as the shopper picks. Check before you add a product that large.
